Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good Instagram engagement rate in Malaysia?
Malaysian Instagram benchmarks: below 0.5% is poor, 0.5–1.5% is average, 1.5–3% is good, above 3% is excellent. Nano influencers (under 10K) typically see 5–8% ER. Micro (10K–50K) average 2–4%. Macro (50K–500K) average 1–2%. Mega creators average 0.5–1%. Lower ER at higher follower counts is normal.
How is Instagram engagement rate calculated?
Instagram ER = (Total Likes + Comments) ÷ Total Followers × 100. Some marketers include Saves and Shares in the formula — this gives a higher ER that reflects total interaction. For consistency when comparing creators, use the standard formula (likes + comments ÷ followers). Instagram doesn't share reach publicly, so followers is the standard denominator.
Should I use engagement rate or reach to evaluate Instagram campaigns?
Use both. Engagement rate shows content quality and audience connection. Reach shows actual exposure. A creator with 3% ER and 10K followers reaches 10,000 people with high engagement. A creator with 1% ER and 100K followers reaches 100,000 people with lower engagement. For brand awareness, prioritise reach. For conversions, prioritise ER.
